Desire are like bacteria. they multiply fast if not checked. They cause the disease of the mind. Desires are responsible for all mental agitations and sorrow. They ruin man's concentration. Man's mind moves from one selfis desire to another just as a fledgling hops from one branch to another. The little bird is afraid to leave the tree and soar high into the sky. So too man clings to his material desires little realising that he belongs to the vast expanse above his mundane existence. Therefore search in your mind for the innumerable desires and eliminate them. Pitch your ideal high. Fix an unselfish goal in life above your routine material living. Let your intellect guide your actions towards that goal. Do not let selfish desires interfere with the oath of your chosen ideal. Be true to your conscience. Work tirelessly till you achieve your end.
"This above all---to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man"
--William Shakespeare "Hamlet" Act 1, Scene III
Continue such selfless work in a spirit of dedication to a higher ideal, all your selfish desires will perish. Death of the selfish personality alone is the law of life.
As long as you have not reached the state of god realisation you are bound to have desires. Vedanta does not condemn you for having desires. It forbids you from falling a prey to your uncontrollable desiring, yearning or craving. Bhagavad Geta entreats you not to succumb to the onslaught of desires.
"He who can withstand the force of passion and anger even here in this life, before he is separated from the body, is spiritually steadfast, he is happy."
--Geeta, Chapter V, Verse 23.
